TOOLS TO POWER UP YOUR PARENTING

The power of "S.M.A.R.T. goals"

Proactive parents set parenting goals to keep them on course and reach their target. Goals give parents direction and purpose. Through goal setting, proactive parents become aware of what they want to achieve as parents and consciously take steps toward reaching that destination.

S.M.A.R.T. Goals are:

S = Specific   What are the details? Include dates, times, places.

M = Measurable   How much? By when?

A = Achievable   Can you really do it?

R = Results Oriented  What do you want to achieve?

T = Time Limited   When will it happen?

S.M.A.R.T. Goals should be stated in a positive way. Some examples are:

1.) I will do the homework that needs to be done for tomorrow by 7pm.

2.) I will weigh 135 pounds by October 1, 2008.

Write three S.M.A.R.T. Goals:

1.) ______________________________________________________________________

2.) _______________________________________________________________________________

3.) _______________________________________________________________________________

Follow-up work: Write three S.M.A.R.T. GOALS with your children for this week. Setting goals with your children may require sitting down with a calendar to negotiate the specifics of dates, times and places. For example: This week we will sit down to dinner as a family on Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights.

GOALS:

1.) ______________________________________________________________________

2.) _______________________________________________________________________________

3.) _______________________________________________________________________________
